Station House is a residential children’s activity centre based in the village of Redmire in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. Station House provides young people access to this amazing area and rents are kept affordable to ensure the centre is available for all.
Station House has four dormitories that sleep 20 people in modern bunk beds. It has sizable common areas appropriate for the occupants. It has a healthy calendar of future bookings and during 2019 had a booking rate of 75% for whole the year. It is difficult to know the exact number of people who have enjoyed Station House, but we estimate between 15,000 to 20,000 young people have used the centre during its time as an activity centre.
Station House is held under trust for 2nd Acomb Scout Group based in York. It has been in Scout possession since 1963 under an initial lease, purchased in 1988 and underwent a significant extension is 1997. As an entity, it is financially stable, up to date with regulation and supported under the umbrella of the Scout Association.
Station House stands on the original railway platform that is now operated by The Wensleydale Railway, a service that carries 50,000 passengers a year. Station House has stood proud since 1870 at what is now the end of the line and is one of the iconic buildings in the area. The trustees wish to preserve the activity centre, sympathetic to its railway heritage for generations to come.
Like any old building, Station House needs regular maintenance and upkeep which is undertaken by volunteers or local trades funded by the modest rents taken. We are now in a position where we need to undertake a larger project in the next 24 months to keep the building serviceable, which is beyond the scope of the normal funding the centre receives and for which we are seeking external funding and sponsorship.
The current dated kitchen needs opening and replacing with a new modern kitchen more suitable for catering for groups of the size that use the facility.
The ablutions facilities are cold, dark and housed in the original covered yard where the flat roof, that is at the end of life and needs a replacement. A new cavity wall retrofitted to create a naturally warm dry area enabling a modern, comfortable ablutions area to be installed.
The Trustees wish to replace the current inverted flat roof with a pitched roof in the same style as the other roofs and within the original style of the building.
